We throw out mountains of stuff. Mostly plastic. We hate landfills and plastic pollution. We fear they will kill us. We must slow down this problem.
It would help to at least set a limit on how much new plastic can be created each year. UN negotiations for a global plastics treaty have collapsed. Most countries wanted a limit but the countries that produce the most plastic want to keep producing unlimited amounts of it. They suggest we all do a better job of recycling, reuse and redesign of plastic products.
How can we bring less plastic into Eastern Ontario and raise the value of the plastic that we do throw out? I’d like to see limits on the production of single-use beverage containers and a requirement that all beverage containers (including pop, coffee, water, and alcohol) be returnable for a return of deposit.
