The removal of hazardous materials means more money will have to be spent on arena renovations in Brownsburg.

On July 8, a notice of motion and deposit of regulation was introduced to Brownsburg-Chatham council to allow an additional $300,000 to be spent on the project for the removal of lead-based paint and asbestos from the Aréna Gilles-Lupien building.

The additional $300,000 will bring the total amount being spent to $2,300,000.

Mayor Kévin Maurice said the situation is not unusual considering when the arena was originally built. The facility was originally constructed in the 1950s.

The $3.5 million arena renovation project is being funded by $1.4 million in grants from the Québec and federal governments, and from the $2.1 million “Ma Ville, Mon Aréna!” fundraising campaign.
