Vankleek Hill residents often hear bagpipes in their neighbourhood whenever Gilbert Young is at home playing. Young is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Pipe Band in Ottawa and was recently honoured with a King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contribution to the RCMP.

On June 24 at a ceremony held at RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa, RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme presented Young with the medal.

The citation reads, “P/Sgt. Gilbert Young has made a significant contribution to the RCMP, his community and Canada as a piper of the RCMP Pipe Band, National Capital Region over the past 25 years and tens of thousands of volunteer hours.”

Young’s daughter, Trudy Young, also attended the ceremony.

Gilbert Young most recently travelled with the RCMP Pipe Band to The Netherlands to commemorate Canadian forces liberating the European country from Nazi occupation during World War Two.
