Grenville council wants a place closer to home for area residents to return their empties.
In March, Consignaction, the Québec container return deposit program, expanded beyond beer and soft drink cans and bottles. It now includes all plastic beverage containers from 100 millilitres to two litres, in addition to the aluminum beverage containers from 100 millilitres to two litres and ready-to-drink beverage cans, including juices, sparkling and flavoured waters, beer, and cocktails.
In Grenville, there are eight businesses that sell beverage containers with a return deposit, but there is only one business that has return machines. Those are the machines that customers feed empties into and receive a ticket to collect the deposit return money or receive a discount on merchandise at the cash register. The machines are also frequently broken or will only accept containers from items sold at that business. The nearest redemption centre operated by Consignaction is in Lachute.
Grenville council has adopted a motion requesting Consignaction open a redemption centre to serve the western area of Argenteuil.
