The United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) has agreed to designate parts of Front Road East and Front Road West (County Road 4) at the east and west limits of the Town of Hawkesbury as Community Safety Zones (CSZ).
UCPR council granted the Town of Hawkesbury’s request on Wednesday, June 25 without any discussion or debate. The Town of Hawkesbury has made the request so increased fines may be collected for speed enforcement at the town limits. The designation of CSZ’s is also part of the process to enable the installation of electronic speed enforcement (ASE) cameras on town streets. Hawkesbury council has given greater attention to excessive speed on town streets in recent months.
The original request made by the town also proposed a CSZ be designated on part of County Road 17, where Hawkesbury shares a boundary with Champlain Township. However, the UCPR Public Works Department determined that County Road 17 does not present an immediate safety concern to justify the designation of a CSZ.
On County Road 4, the UCPR has agreed to designate CSZ’s on Front Road West from West Street to 150 metres west, and on Front Road East from Tupper Street to 20 metres east of the intersection.
The Town of Hawkesbury has not yet made any decision on proceeding with the purchase and installation of ASE cameras.
