The smell of coal smoke was in the air with the sound of hammers in Dunvegan on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15.

The Glengarry Pioneer Museum hosted its ninth annual Smith-In Blacksmith Festival. According to Museum Curator Jennifer Black, about 15 blacksmiths from Ontario, Québec, and New England were at the museum during the weekend doing their trade. The blacksmiths were each making various items from iron, and were mostly using portable, coal-fired forges. The museum’s historic Olivier Hamelin Blacksmith Shop was open and operating, along with a large, carriage-mounted coal-fired forge ventilated by giant bellows operated by well-recognized blacksmith Pat Taylor.
