The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet and the Lefaivre Lions Club are partnering to build an event pavilion at the Lefaivre Waterfront Park.

On Tuesday, June 3, township council adopted a resolution to proceed with the next steps necessary to complete the project, including a capital budget for 2026, and initiating the tendering process and obtaining the required permits.

Guy Yelle of the Lions Club told council that the club will pay the entire cost of the project, up to $102,000, over a three-year period.

The pavilion will be used as a picnic shelter for park visitors, and for events such as the annual Canada Day festivities in Lefaivre.

Mayor Yves Laviolette said he appreciates the involvement of the Lions Club with the park in Lefaivre.

Councillor Jean-Pierre Cadieux was impressed that the project would not incur major costs for the township.

Councillor Ian Walker expressed concern about adding another building to the municipality’s responsibilities when it is already difficult for the township to look after so many buildings. He suggested the township sell a surplus building in Lefaivre or in another place.

“We have way too many buildings,” Walker remarked.

Chief Administrative Officer Michel Potvin acknowledged constructing the pavilion means adding more infrastructure, but it would be a good piece of infrastructure from a valued community group. He said he is planning to present some recommendations to council in a future report. He said tough decisions will have to be made and remarked how the township has numerous rinks, parks, and community centres for a population less than 10,000.

“It’s not feasible,” Potvin said.

Councillor Benoit Lamarche also expressed his support for the Lions Club plan to build a pavilion at the Lefaivre Park.
