Turtles are on the move this time of year, but slowly, because they are turtles.

Female turtles are particularly busy because egg laying season peaks in June. All types of turtles dig holes and lay their eggs in the ground and then bury them. Eggs are most often laid in the early morning and around sunset. The eggs incubate there and hatch, and the babies begin life by digging their way out. Sandy areas are especially popular for laying turtle eggs. Do not disturb turtles that are digging holes or laying eggs, and do not dig up the eggs. Drivers and cyclists should also take care not to hit turtles on roads and recreational paths.
