Most people who go to the L’Orignal Old Jail these days go because they want to see the historic building. That was not always the case.
On Sunday, June 1, the jail opened for the 2025 season with an open house highlighting the 200th anniversary of the building. The jail, which is the oldest in Ontario, operated from 1825 to 1998, is now a museum. The adjacent courthouse is still in use.
Each summer, the not-for-profit organization which operates the museum hires students to work as interpreters for visitors. Elizabeth Decoeur, Sara-Maude Sirois, Adele Sauvé, and Ben Inskip are on the job at the jail this season.
The open house was one of a series of events being held throughout the year to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the L’Orignal Old Jail.
