The federal consumer carbon tax ended on Tuesday, April 1 and the proof was immediately evident with significantly reduced gasoline prices in the area.
In Hawkesbury, the price was more than $1.40 per litre on March 31. On April 1, it was around $1.19 per litre.
However, gas prices did not decrease in Québec. Since 2013, Québec has had its own cap-and-trade carbon pricing system which is based on credits and offsets. It still affects the price of fuel and other products but is not a direct tax like the federal carbon tax was. On April 1, gasoline prices in Grenville were $1.42.9 per litre.
All sales taxes, fuel excise taxes, and carbon pricing taxes are included in the price of fuel.
