At the Champlain Township council meeting on February 27, council unanimously approved the appointment of a new Building Inspector and By-law Enforcement Officer, Stéphanie Brunette.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kevin Tessier stated that the position is being filled to replace a departing employee and is not a newly opened position in the township, nor was there an additional need.

Brunette worked as an Architectural and Structural Technician for Lascelle Engineering between 2021 and 2025. She has 11 years of experience with building codes and holds a diploma in Architectural Technology from La Cité Collégiale.

The primary duties and responsibilities of Building Inspectors include overseeing the issuance of building permits and inspections within the township, as well as ensuring that ongoing construction projects comply with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and municipal regulations.

By-law Enforcement Officers, on the other hand, are mainly concerned with ensuring Champlain property standards (safe and orderly condition of property, maintenance, structural integrity), animal control (pet licensing, related by-laws), and zoning compliance (how land and buildings may be utilized in the township).

Brunette’s contract came into effect on March 3, with salary and other conditions of employment being determined by the CAO.
