Two public planning meetings have been scheduled in North Glengarry for proposed significant industrial and commercial projects.

The first of the public meetings is about a proposal by Compass Energy Consulting to install a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on land between Skye Road and Highway 417 on the south side of the North Glengarry boundary with The Nation. A BESS installation takes electricity from the power grid and stores it in high-capacity batteries to be released back into the grid at higher times of consumer demand. The site of the proposed BESS installation is near Hydro One transmission lines and the St-Isidore Transformer Station.

To enable construction of the BESS facility, a Zoning By-Law Amendment is required to change the zoning of the site from General Agricultural to General Agricultural Special Exception.

In November 2024, North Glengarry Council adopted a resolution supporting the proposed BESS project.

The second public planning meeting involves a proposed Zoning By-Law Amendment for a planned expansion of Herb’s Travel Plaza Service Centre near the intersection of Highway 34 and Highway 417. If adopted, the zoning on currently vacant land west of the existing travel plaza would change from General Agricultural to General Agricultural Special Exception and add the following permitted uses to the site:

  • Accessory dwelling
  • Automobile sales establishment
  • Automobile service centre
  • Car and truck wash facilities
  • Catering establishment
  • Commercial garage
  • Convenience store
  • Electric vehicle charging station
  • Gas and diesel fueling stations
  • Hotel and tourist lodging
  • Parking lot
  • Restaurant
  • Secure storage compound
  • Service outlets
  • Transportation depot

Both public meetings take place at 5:30 pm on Monday, February 24 at the North Glengarry Municipal Council Chamber, located at 3720 County Road 34, Alexandria.
