On January 13, the Creating Centre in Vankleek Hill hosted the first writing workshop of 2025. Every week brings a new writing topic to be covered.
Attendees were introduced to the magical realism writing style by workshop host, Florencia Lazcano, through a creative writing activity. Individuals were given different photographs at random as their starting point and were asked to create a short story using the magical realism techniques covered in the workshop.
Those who were comfortable sharing their short stories received feedback on their work from other attendees.
Drop-ins are welcome to the donate-what-you-can workshops. Interested participants can reach out to Lazcano at [email protected] to reserve a spot, request information, or provide suggestions for future iterations.
“Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, we invite you to join us for an inspiring journey through different genres and styles,” Lazcano stated.
Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in future writing workshops held every Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 11 High Street.
The Creating Centre will also be hosting a clothing swap event on January 26 between noon and 5 p.m., where participants have the opportunity to exchange gently used clothing for adults and children. Children’s toys and other accessories, including jewelry, hair accessories, belts and more are also suggested swappable items.
The event aims to help the community refresh their closet while helping the environment by keeping usable clothing and other items out of landfills. Any clothing and items left remaining after the event will be donated to the Vankleek Hill Thrift Store.
