A veteran provincial politician whose hometown is Vankleek Hill, is attempting a move to federal politics.

On Sunday, January 12, Ottawa Centre Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Joel Harden was nominated as the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate in Ottawa Centre. Harden will represent the party whenever the next federal election is held.

“New Democrats in Ottawa Centre are excited to bring a hopeful, determined approach to politics on Parliament Hill,” said Harden. “We need an MP that will build on what our party has accomplished for Canadians: dental care for millions, labour rights for workers, and a commitment to human rights at home and abroad. I am thrilled at the prospect of joining Jagmeet (Singh) and our federal team. It’s the people’s time!” Harden said in a press release.

The current Member of Parliament (MP) for Ottawa Centre is Liberal Yasir Naqvi.

Harden was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2018 and has served as the Official Opposition critic for transit and active transportation.
