On December 18, 2024, the Commission de protection du territoire agricole du Québec (CPTAQ) suspended its deliberation on Canada Carbon’s proposed Miller mining project in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge (GSLR) until January 31.

“The virtual public hearing went well,” Grenville-sur-la-Rouge municipal councillor Denis Fillion stated after a full day of presentations on Zoom.

The project has drawn criticism and vocal opposition from multiple organizations, GSLR council, and environmental groups, arguing that the mine will negatively impact the environment for residents and wildlife. The application is before the CPTAQ due to significant stands of sugar maples in the vicinity which are used for maple syrup production.

CPTAQ Vice Chair Élaine Grignon explained her decision to suspend deliberation on the project will allow each party time to submit additional documentation, including from Canada Carbon. The company has been proposing the Miller project since 2016.

Once all relevant documents have been received and filed, the CPTAQ will take approximately 60-90 days to render its final decision.
