With a good base of snow and ice already on the ground, things look promising for some excellent skiing this winter on the Ski Vent Clic trail system around Vankleek Hill.
“Cross-country ski trails require a firm base of compact snow and ice on which to build the ski trails, so what’s on the ground so far is actually a good start”, said Ski Vent Clic President Ross Gourlay. Before the groomers can track-set the trails, they must create a solid base by compacting snow and filling holes and depressions, and covering rocks, all of which are dangerous for skiers. The club plans to open some sections of the trail in December and hopes to be fully open by January 1.
While trail grooming has not yet begun, skiers may purchase season passes online at https://skivankleekhill.ca/, at the discounted rate of $35 through December 31. As of January 1, the rate increases to $45. Season and day passes may also be purchased at Depanneur Lalande in Vankleek Hill and Sports Experts in Hawkesbury. Season passes make wonderful Christmas gifts! Children 16 and under ski for free.
This Fall, a team of eighteen dedicated volunteers spent more than 150 hours clearing trails of overgrown brush, fallen trees and branches along the 16-kilometre network of ski trails which circumnavigate Vankleek Hill. In addition, bridges are maintained that allow safe passage for skiers over streams and ditches.
Ski Vent Clic thanks the many volunteers who generously give their time and energy to assist with trail maintenance and grooming, to the landowners who kindly allow the club to use their land, and to the ongoing financial support of Champlain Township. The club has been in continuous operation for more than 50 years!
