Shakuhachi Master Debbie Danbrook and local harpist ian hepburn performed at Arbor Gallery on November 30 as part of a concert called ‘Footsteps in the Snow.’ The sold-out concert offered meditative music, where the unrehearsed original music of each musician blended seamlessly. Danbrook explained her evolution as a musician and her feeling of finding what she was meant to do when she heard the first notes of a shakuhachi flute at a concert one day. She travelled to Japan to learn the art of playing the 16-century bamboo instrument, which is traditionally taught and played only by men. She finally found a teacher, went on to become a shakuhachi master and has recorded several albums. Hepburn is well-known as a local music teacher and weaver and has found time in his busy schedule to play his recently acquired Scottish harp for patients and staff at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital. The backdrop for the Arbor Gallery concert was a two-person exhibit called, ‘Bent Light’, which features colourful woven blankets by hepburn and blown glass pieces by Vankleek Hill glassblower Eric Davy. In an adjacent room, the works of local artists Rosemary Harden and Lise Piche are on display. The exhibit continues until December 16; Arbor Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Arbor Gallery is located at 36 Home Avenue in Vankleek HIll. The gallery will be relocating to new premises on High Street in January 2025.
