At the October 24 meeting, Champlain Township Council approved a project for new exterior lighting for the L’Orignal Old Jail. The refurbishment project began on November 13 and is expected to be completed by November 22.
A report to Council stated that the latest projection lights will highlight the building’s façade and architectural heritage.
Councillors Peter Barton and André Roy sought clarification as to why the plans were being presented to Council. They heard from Mayor Normand Riopel that the L’Orignal Old Jail had been designated a heritage building. Therefore, Council needed to approve any potential projects dealing with the property located at 59 Court Street.
The “En route vers 2025” committee was put together in January 2024 and has discussed projects and programming for commemorative celebrations in 2025, including the L’Orignal Old Jail.
The project is estimated to cost $9,694.47, including taxes, and has no financial implications for the Township. The work is being carried out by Hydro Cam, Barrette Electric, and CGP Paygasiste for excavation, installation, and backfilling.
Heritage properties that are officially designated must demonstrate historical or cultural significance in the community. The L’Orignal Old Jailhouse was constructed in 1825 and has been at the heart of municipal government during its lifetime. The jail closed its doors in 1998.
The L’Orignal Old Jail was designated a heritage site in June 2007. Its stone building is designed in a typical Georgian style and includes a symmetrical rectangular shape, exterior cut stone, and a small dome in the centre. The additional projection lighting, carefully placed so as not to disturb the site’s aesthetic qualities, will emphasize its prominence in the community and contribute to the overall beautification of the area.
Council unanimously approved the project to ensure the building’s heritage is proudly displayed and illuminated for the 200th anniversary in 2025. The official lighting of the building is scheduled to take place in early January 2025 to mark the commemorative year in L’Orignal.
