The Township of North Glengarry adopted a motion to enter a five-year Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) lease in an attempt to standardize the level of services offered to the libraries of Alexandria and Maxville. The council voted to establish the lease agreement on September 30 during their meeting.

“We worked together, all of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, to put together a lease contract that would be normalized across all the municipalities,” Director of Community Services Anne Leduc presented to the council.

This lease agreement will be between the Corporation of the Township of North Glengarry and the SDG County Library Board, retroactively beginning on January 1, 2024, and lasting until January 1, 2029, unless a 90-day written notice is given by either party.

Rent, excluding HST, will increase slightly to $10.04 per square foot, a rise of 2.91 per cent from 2023’s rate of $9.75 per square foot. The total cost for the lease will be $40,360.80 for the 2024 year, with $25,993.56 earmarked for Alexandria’s library and the remaining $14,367.24 for Maxville’s, excluding applicable taxes.

The cost of rent is subject to an Annual Consumer Price Index Adjustment to keep in line with changes to the cost of living in subsequent years. Rent will include services such as pest control, maintenance of smoke alarms, and other items specific to each of the two sites.

The original lease between the two parties was from December 31, 2017, to December 31, 2022, with updates to the upcoming lease being made from November 23, 2023. A draft lease agreement was also reviewed in February of this year to address services provided to SDG libraries.
