On Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 1pm to 4:00 pm, families and caregivers of those with special needs are invited to the second annual Accessible Halloween Trick-or-Treating Event on Marseille Street in Embrun, Ontario. Presented by Ability Hive and GoūtArt Altruism, with major sponsorship from Riznik Electric and Le Bosquet Dogwood and Willow Ranch, this unique event is designed to ensure that everyone can experience the joy of Halloween in a sensory-friendly, accessible environment.

This community-driven, grassroots event has been carefully crafted to accommodate children and individuals with special needs, providing an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all participants.

Event Highlights:

  • Tables with Treats & Non-Food Items: Candy and fun toys will be placed at the end of driveways, making it easier to enjoy trick-or-treating at a relaxed pace.
  • Amazing Halloween Decorations: Expect festive, friendly Halloween decor that enhances the spooky atmosphere while remaining accessible and fun for all.
  • Character Appearances: Look forward to special guest characters making appearances throughout the event to delight the children.
  • Regulation Station: A station setup by Flow Recreation Therapy where those who need a break or to regulate can find tools and sensory items to use or borrow at the event
  • Daytime Event: Running during the afternoon ensures better visibility, warmth (hopefully!), and reduces issues for those with light sensitivities by avoiding harsh Halloween lighting.
  • Quiet Atmosphere: There will be no loud music or unexpected sounds, creating a calming and safe environment for those sensitive to noise.
  • No Large Crowds: Unlike traditional Halloween night, this event eliminates the need to navigate big crowds, making it ideal for individuals with sensory challenges.
  • Free to Attend: There is no cost for families to participate.

“We want to make Halloween an enjoyable experience for everyone, especially those who often feel overwhelmed by the traditional festivities or cannot participate due to accessibility issues,” said Kim Vincent, founder of Ability Hive. “This event is all about creating an inclusive space where everyone can enjoy the spirit of the season in their own way.”
