The warden’s job in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG) will remain Glengarry in 2025, but it will shift from North Glengarry to South Glengarry.

On Monday, August 26, SDG Counties Council elected the South Glengarry Deputy Mayor Martin Lang to become warden. He will be sworn in at an inaugural meeting in December. This year, council agreed to select the incoming warden in August, to allow a greater overlap before the changeover. South Stormont Mayor Bryan McGillis also expressed interest in the role. SDG Counties Council members voted for the 2025 warden in a secret-ballot election on August 26. Lang is a first-time member of SDG Counties Council, but is enjoying his second term as a member of the South Glengarry council. In 2018 Lang was elected as a councillor in South Glengarry. Lang indicated he’s looking forward to leading SDG Counties into 2025.

“I’m very appreciative of this opportunity. I will work hard to represent council and our residents to the best of my ability,” said Lang. “Our work at the upper-tier is integral to the successes we have outlined in the SDG Counties strategic plan. It’s my goal to ensure that our work remains focused, positive and fiscally-responsible.”

2024 SDG Counties Warden and North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald will work closely with Lang for the balance of the year to ensure the transition is both smooth and efficient.

“By electing the incoming warden now, we can work together to ensure important files like infrastructure improvements, health care, education and housing are advanced for the betterment of our community and residents,” said MacDonald.

The 2025 inaugural meeting for SDG Counties Council is scheduled for December 13 in Cornwall.
