It was not a whopper of a blaze, but enough to cause some damage to the Burger King location in downtown Hawkesbury on Tuesday, July 30.

Franchise owner Jean-Guy Legault said the fire in the restaurant’s kitchen began at around 10:30 am.

“The fryer’s caught fire,” he said.

According to Legault, the built-in fire suppression system in the kitchen was insufficient to stop the fire, so the Hawkesbury Fire Department was called.

Nobody was injured during the fire. Three employees and one customer were inside the Burger King when the fire started. Everyone got outside safely. About 20 people work at the downtown outlet of the popular burger chain.

Legault estimated the Hawkesbury Burger King will be closed for a week or more. Significant cleaning will be required, and new fryers will have to be installed.

“That does not happen overnight,” he said.

“We will reopen ASAP,” he added.

Legault thanked the public for their concern and cooperation following the fire.
