The thrift store in L’Orignal is closing, but the village’s food bank will remain open.
High operating costs and a lack of volunteers are preventing the thrift store from raising funds to support the food bank. The thrift store has operated in L’Orignal for 20 years.
Effective June 3, 2024, the thrift store is open only on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9
am to 3 pm. Major liquidation sales will be held on June 22 and July 13 to clear out the inventory. At the end of July, the store will permanently close, or earlier if the merchandise is sold out.
Thanks to generous donations from the community, the food bank will continue to operate. The food bank currently serves more than 50 families each month.
The food bank will now rely solely on community fundraising and monetary donations. As of now, donations of clothing or other items from the thrift store are no longer being accepted. The food bank asks that people do not leave items at the door of behind the thrift store as the collection bins are being removed and the food bank will have to pay to have the items removed.
Currently, the L’Orignal Food Bank is located on Longueuil Street. However, it will be relocating by the end of August. New premises will reduce operating costs to a minimum in order to continue serving local residents facing food insecurity, exacerbated by the constant rise in food prices.
Food Bank President François Turpin said the new location on the food bank is still being finalized.
The L’Orignal Food Bank thanks all of its volunteers and donors for their continued support.
