Environment Canada has confirmed a tornado touched down in the area of Rigaud, Pointe-Fortune, and Saint-Rédempteur shortly before 6 pm on Monday, May 27.
A tornado watch had been in effect all afternoon for the area, and for Prescott-Russell as a series of severe thunderstorms moved across Ontario and Québec from the US Midwest where storms containing tornadoes had caused several deaths, injuries, and significant damage in recent days.
As of Monday night, no deaths or injuries were reported from the tornado in the Rigaud area, but there were reports of damage to buildings. One photo, widely circulated on social media, showed the tornado near a busy Autoroute 40.
The Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University in London, Ontario investigates tornadoes across the country. However, it had no information about the Rigaud area tornado as of Monday evening.
