Two families are moving into homes in Maxville constructed through the first ever Habitat for Humanity building project in North Glengarry.
On Thursday, April 25, Habitat for Humanity of Cornwall and The Counties (SDG), held a key presentation ceremony for the new homes of Mellissa Gaines and her two children, and Cory and Brigitte Jacques and their four children.
Construction of the new, semi-detached homes began in the fall of 2023 and continued through the winter.
North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald, Deputy Mayor Carma Williams, councillors, and municipal staff attended the ceremony. The Cornwall Quilters Guild presented each family with a quilt for their new homes.
Several businesses based in North Glengarry participated in the Habitat for Humanity project in Maxville. Mouldings were donated by Alexandria Moulding, Maxville Home Hardware donated paint, Dave Sauve Plumbing provided plumbing services, roofing labour was provided by Eric Carrier Roofing, HVAC installation was provided by McDerven Mechanical, windows and doors were provided by Glengarry Windows and Doors, and lot surveys were done by
I.B.W. Surveyors.
Families obtaining Habitat for Humanity homes and volunteers from the community provide a significant amount of the construction labour. Each family is required to commit 500 hours of partnership and volunteer time. Other volunteers are individuals and groups from schools and community organizations.
Habitat homes are not given to partner families. The family purchases the house at fair market value with an interest-free mortgage based on 30 per cent of their income. The cost of the property taxes is factored into the mortgage payments, rather than having the homeowners pay them separately. The homeowners are responsible for all other utility costs and maintenance of their homes. The
total cost of the home is determined through an appraisal, completed at the end of construction.
