A traffic stop on Highway 417 near Vankleek Hill has led to a series of drug-related charges for two suspects.

At around 1:20 am on Tuesday, April 16, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 417 at kilometre marker 35 due to a burned-out headlight. Officers seized more than $30,000 worth of drugs and $2,235 in cash following a traffic stop.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, 34-year-old Etienne Joseph Montpetit of Ottawa was arrested and charged with the following offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), and the Criminal Code (CC):

  • CDSA – Adult possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine
  • CDSA – Adult possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Methamphetamine
  • CDSA – Adult possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Other Drugs
  • CC Adult possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 – in Canada

The passenger, 39-year-old Ryan Gordon of Ottawa, was also charged with the following offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), and the Criminal Code (CC):

  • CDSA – Adult possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine
  • CDSA – Adult possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Methamphetamine
  • CDSA – Adult possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – Other Drugs
  • CC Adult possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 – in Canada

Both suspects were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court on May 8, 2024 in L’Orignal.
