The heavy rainfall in the weather forecast for this weekend has led two conservation authorities to issues Water Safety Statements for their watersheds.
South Nation Conservation (SNC) has issued a yellow level Water Safety Statement.

Weather Forecast: Environment Canada is forecasting mild weather with the potential of 20 to 40 millimetres of rainfall beginning Saturday and carrying over into Sunday. The rain may mix with snow by Sunday evening. Temperatures are expected to return to below zero late Sunday evening.
Environmental Conditions: Snowmelt due to warmer temperatures, combined with anticipated rainfall may result in increased water levels and flows in rivers, potentially causing nuisance flooding in low-lying areas.
Risks: All rivers and streams across the jurisdiction may experience higher water levels, fast flowing water and slippery or unstable banks.
ACTION: Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies due to high river flows and slippery conditions. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property. Please ensure:
- Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
- Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
- Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
- Securing items that might float away as flows increase.
Duration: The Water Safety Statement for the SNC territory is in effect until March 14, 2024 at 5 p.m. or until an update has been issued.
SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) is issuing a Water Safety Statement for the RRCA jurisdiction.
The current short-term weather forecast indicates that a low-pressure system will bring widespread rain across Eastern Ontario this weekend. The forecasted rainfall is expected to rapidly increase water levels and flows in local watercourses, potentially causing nuisance flooding in low-lying areas. Please be aware that high-water flows and slippery conditions around water could be dangerous. Caution should be exercised near waterbodies.
This statement is in effect until Friday, March 15, 2024. The RRCA will continue monitoring water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning program. Updates will be provided as conditions change.
