The re-opening of Champlain Township’s municipal landfill is good news for a variety of reasons.

As of Saturday, October 29, the municipal landfill, located at 1897 Cassburn Road, is open to the public on its regular schedule, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon until the end of November and will reopen on May 6, 2023.

Note that the permit from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks does not allow the municipality to operate the landfill between the months of December and April.

Hours of Operation 2022

  • October 29, 9 a.m. to noon
  • November 5, 9 a.m. to noon
  • November 12, 9 a.m. to noon
  • November 19, 9 a.m. to noon
  • November 26, 9 a.m. to noon

Although the last two weeks were usually restricted to organic and biodegradable materials only, it will not be the case this year. Therefore, to accommodate residents, all accepted materials can be brought in during business hours until November 26th.

This facility is available to Champlain residents for a fee based on the amount of material dropped off. Please note that only cash payments are accepted. Please refer to the fee list on the Waste and Recycling page on Champlain Township’s website.

  • The collection contractor will not pick up any other bag.

Background

Champlain Township’s website was closed in late 2021, in part to do further study of a contaminant plume, which had spread onto land which the municipality was in the process of expropriating to contain the plume. The end of the plume had not yet been determined.

We will have updates to this story soon. In the meantime, read some previous coverage about the landfill site here:
