Flags in front of municipal facilities in Hawkesbury were at half-mast again by the afternoon of Friday, June 25.

Following the recent discovery of 751 unmarked graves at the former Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan, all flags will be flown at half-mast for an undetermined period to honour the lives and memories of the individuals buried at the site.

A statement from the Town of Hawkesbury issued on Friday afternoon recognizes the traditional Algonguin Anishnaabeg territory on which the town is located. The town also extended its sincere condolences to first nations people, residential school survivors, their families, and their communities.

In May, when the graves of 215 children were discovered at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia, the Town of Hawkesbury and many other local municipalities in Ontario and Québec lowered flags to half-mast out of respect for the children.
