Although Champlain Township councillors had originally prepared a recommendation to reject a request for $2,000 from the Cornwall and District Alzheimer’s Society, it decided at the regular March 12 council meeting to give $1,000 to the organization this year, in support of the more than $2,000 it costs to host Canada Day activities, which it spearheads, at the Vankleek Hill Community Centre.
The event, which has taken place for the past few years, includes a slo-pitch tournament, inflatable games and other activities for Canada Day; proceeds from the day go to the Alzheimer’s Society, which serves clients in Eastern Ontario.
At its committee of the whole meeting, council had suggested contacting the Alzheimer’s Society to recommend that it ask for support along with others requesting community grants.
The township is also waiving the ball diamond rental fee.
