Students at St. Jude Catholic Elementary School in Vankleek Hill are scoring lower on provincial tests in reading, writing, and mathematics than their counterparts elsewhere in the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO), according to numbers from the Ministry of Education’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). Meanwhile, students at St. Finnan’s Catholic Elementary School in Alexandria are meeting or exceeding the provincial and board standards. At the elementary level, students in grades three and six write the tests.
At the secondary level, provincial tests are complete for grade nine mathematics and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). English-speaking Catholic students from the Vankleek Hill and Alexandria areas usually attend St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School in Hammond or Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School on Tyotown Road near Cornwall. At both high schools, students in the grade nine applied mathematics course are scoring significantly below the Ontario and CDSBEO averages. Meanwhile, the academic level mathematics students scored at or significantly above board and provincial averages. Completion rates of the OSSLT are very high for both secondary schools. Success rates were higher however at St. Francis Xavier than at Holy Trinity.
