A tragedy occurred over the Canada Day weekend on Rivière Rouge in Huberdeau. A 17-year-old male was swept into the river and drowned. Sergeant Marc Tessier of the Sûreté du Québec said the youth was trying to cross the river on Saturday afternoon and was swept away in the current. It was impossible for others to try and assist because of the dangerous conditions. SQ officers, including divers and a helicopter searched the area downstream throughout the rest of Saturday and overnight into Sunday. The body was discovered at around 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Rivière Rouge flows south to the Ottawa River at Grenville-sur-la Rouge.
The Sûreté du Québec recently issued reminders to the public about summer vacation safety on waterways and in the wilderness.
