After five years, the municipality of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge wants the Ministère des transports de Québec (MTQ) to reconstruct a bridge that has been closed since 2019.

The bridge linking chemin Walker to chemin La Prairie has been closed since flooding in the area in the spring of 2019 made it unsafe. Bridges on municipal roads in Québec are provincial responsibility. Mayor Tom Arnold said the continued closure of the bridge is an inconvenience for residents.

“It makes a long detour for some,” he said.

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge council adopted a resolution on May 14 requesting the MTQ accelerate the process of replacing the bridge.

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge would also like the MTQ to assume responsibility for another structure on a municipal road.

Arnold said a culvert on chemin Avoca actually meets the legal definition of a bridge due to its length, and should therefore be a provincial responsibility.

“We’re asking them to take it over,” he said.
