The Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan is now officially open for the season! The museum is open from 10:00 am and 4:00 pm every day, except Mondays.

There is a new canteen building on the museum grounds, where visitors will be able to purchase food and drinks during special events. The museum board has a name for the building in mind, but they wanted to give supporters a chance to share any ideas they may have.

The museum is seeking community help from anyone who may have a refrigerator to donate to the new canteen building. The refrigerator should be no more than 33 inches wide.

There are a handful of spaces left for the museum’s Paint Night Fundraiser which will be held in the Dunvegan Recreation Hall on Thursday, May 30. No prior experience is necessary, just show up and supplies and instructions will be provided (and some delicious snacks!). You can purchase tickets on our website, or phone the museum to reserve your space.

Also, you can mark your calendars for a “Meet me on Main” Dunvegan edition, scheduled on the evening of Saturday, June 8 in the Williams Pavilion at the museum (5pm-8pm). North Glengarry is leading this endeavor with a partnership between the Dunvegan Recreation Association and Museum. Bring some friends, listen to live music, have a drink from the bar, and enjoy some food! All are welcome… not just Dunveganites! The museum will have some children’s activities and the buildings open so visitors can wander around while they are here.

The upcoming “Smith In” is on the Father’s Day weekend, June 15-16. This is the event when blacksmiths come from across Ontario, Québec and few from the USA to hammer at their forges all weekend long. Vendors will be onsite Saturday. Food and children’s activities will be available both days. It will be a great day to check out the new canteen in action.

The museum is now recruiting volunteers to help out at the Smith In. If you are available for a few hours at any point that weekend, please reach out to me and we will slot you into a shift. We will have some shifts at entrance gates and in the kids’ craft area (any high school students who want hours?).

Feel free to stop by the Glengarry Pioneer Museum and say hello to the summer students: Sam Rattigan and Isis McPherson!
