A former Mayor of Alfred and Plantagenet and Warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) has died.

Jean-Yves Lalonde of Curran died on Saturday, April 20 at age 76. Lalonde served as Mayor of Alfred and Plantagenet from 2003 to 2014 and served as UCPR Warden in 2007 and 2011.

“Monsieur Lalonde was a seasoned politician who devoted himself to the township and the surrounding region,” current Alfred and Plantagenet Mayor Yves Laviolette said in a statement issued by the township.

Lalonde also served as the President of the Association française des municipalités de l’Ontario (AFMO), the provincial organization of francophone municipalities.

Lalonde is survived by his wife Ginette, four children, and seven grandchildren.

Out of respect for Lalonde, all flags at municipal buildings in Alfred and Plantagenet were lowered to half-mast until after the funeral, which was on Saturday, April 27 at Église St-Luc church in Curran.
