SUMMARY:Kairos Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The Kairos Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies and the goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land\, and into the role of First Nations\, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level\, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. \n\n\n\nJohn Henri Commanda is Anishinaabe (Ojibway) of the Eagle Clan\, and is a member of Dokis First Nation. He is also President of Mahingan Consulting\, a firm that offers Indigenous Awareness Training\, including Kairos Blanket Exercise (KBE). He has a long experience with the federal government\, including several Aboriginal empowerment initiatives in the public service. He has also served the larger community as president of two Friendship Centres. \n\n\n\nArchie Martin is a Mi’kmaq and Metis Elder and Knowledge Keeper who devotes himself to educate and share the truth\, contributing to correct perceptions about the powerful historic role of native people in the building of the country. In so doing\, he advocates that together we can all continue to write history by opening to each other as peoples\, working towards true reconciliation\, beyond hatred\, prejudices\, and politics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Vernissage - Josée Bourassa
DESCRIPTION:When you think of watercolours\, you probably imagine pretty pastels. But Josée Bourassa\, whose solo exhibition Un monde de couleurs opens at the Arbor Gallery on May 4th\, uses watercolours to create pieces that reflect a moody combination of light and dark. \n\n\n\n“I am fascinated by the transparency\, the opacity and the way watercolours capture the light\, shadows and reflections\,” Bourassa says. “I lean towards realism and enjoy a variety of subjects: portrait\, landscape and still life.” \n\n\n\nBourassa was born in Buckingham (Gatineau) but has lived in the Ottawa suburb of Orleans for many years. When she retired from project management with the Federal Government she was looking at outlets for her creative expression. \n\n\n\n“After trying several painting media\, I chose watercolours and have pursued this path with courses\, mentorship\, self-learning and lots of practice\,” she notes. “I can now paint more on a regular basis and develop my art by discovering and applying new techniques.” She has participated in several group shows and has had two solo exhibitions in the Ottawa area. \n\n\n\nThe vernissage for the exhibition takes place on Saturday May 6th\, from 1 to 3pm. The show runs until May 28th. \n\n\n\nArbor Gallery – Galerie Arbor is located at 36 Home Avenue\, in the heart of Vankleek Hill. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday\, noon to 4pm. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 1\, Ukrainian born Maya Chenier will demonstrate and guide participants in a workshop about pysanky – the art of decorating Easter eggs. A student at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute\, Chenier was encouraged by art teacher Gisele Paquette to teach this traditional wax-resist technique to fellow students\, and to present a workshop at the gallery. \n\n\n\nMargo Chomkulska\, fellow Ukrainian and VCI student\, will join Chenier in showcasing pieces from traditional Ukrainian folk art. Aside from pysanky eggs\, they have prepared pieces of traditional vytynanka\, the art of cutting out intricate designs in paper\, practiced in Ukraine and other Slavic countries.
