Donald Barrett Mutton

Feb 8, 2019

Hawkesbury – It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Donald Barrett Mutton, 91, on the morning of Thursday February 7th, 2019. He was surrounded by his loved ones and made comfortable in his own home after a courageous struggle with cancer, and a sudden heart attack. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Marushak), the love of his life and wind beneath his wings for 55 years. He is survived by his two children: John (Cecile Cassidy) and Judee. He leaves behind six grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Ian Milligan (Jenn Bleakney), Katie Mutton, Samantha Wayland, Christopher Mutton, Lee Wayland and Jenny Mutton (Eric Wedesky), and also leaves behind two beautiful great-grandchildren: Auden and Isla Milligan. Don was born on October 29th, 1927 in New Toronto, Ontario to Celia (Barrett) and Percy Mutton. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto in Chemical Engineering and worked as a research chemist at C.I.P. Research in Hawkesbury, Ontario for 37 years, retiring as Vice President and Director of Research. Our Dad was a polyglot with an insatiable appetite for knowledge. After losing his precious wife in 2008, he kept himself very busy with an active social life, volunteering at a local nursing home, attending concerts and plays, travelling, playing golf, skiing, cooking and baking (he was famous around town for his lemon squares). Dad was very active in the local community and his kindness, generosity and gentle spirit will be dearly missed. Our most sincere appreciation to Dr. Lyne Arsenault and the team of doctors, nurses and PSWs at Hawkesbury General Hospital, the LHIN, and all of the St. Elizabeth, Bayshore and Paramed support workers for providing excellent care. A very special thank you to Wendy Baron, Dad’s invaluable personal support worker for the last year. Dad developed a unique bond with his pal Wendy, who is now, and always will be, a member of our family. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Dad’s name to Doctors Without Borders or the Red Cross. A memorial service and a celebration of a life very well lived will be held in the spring. Please feel free to share your special memories and favourite stories about Dad, as well as your condolences and sympathies to Berthiaume Family Funeral Home, 416, McGill, Hawkesbury, Ontario. www.salonfuneraireberthiaume.com Guest Book.
