1929 – 2022

It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ewen J. MacPhee at North York General Hospital, on Sunday, October 9th, 2022 at the age of 93.

Beloved husband of Mildred (nee MacMillan) for 62 years of marriage and cherished father to Joslyn (Ralph) MacGillivray, Jennifer (Paul) Dowell, Melissa (Jeffery MacLeod) MacPhee, and Jeffrey (Mandy Yong) MacPhee. Proud grandfather to Taylor and Sarah MacGillivray, Karleigh, Cameron and Eric Dowell, Cody and Logan MacLeod, and Justin and Caelan MacPhee.

Ewen is survived by his sister Margaret MacQueen (Ken) and brother-in-law Dougal MacLeod (Judy).

He is predeceased by siblings, Janet MacPhee and Donald Alexander “D.A.” MacPhee and by sister & and brother-in-laws, Helen MacLeod (Dougal) and Gordon MacMillan (Grace).

Remembered by his many nieces and nephews and dear friend, Harold MacMillan.

Ewen was born at his home in Lochiel, Glengarry, Ontario, son of Alexander William “Alex Willie” and Margaret “Maggie” MacPhee and known for his natural athletic abilities in soccer and hockey. Ewen was inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. He started his career with The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) in 1949, in Alexandria, Ontario and he served the bank with dedication in Montreal, New York and Toronto.

Ewen will be remembered as loving and generous to his family and friends. He and Mildred raised their family, initially in New York City and moved to Toronto in 1965. They enjoyed many summer vacations at the Lochiel homestead in Glengarry, Ontario highlighted of course by the Glengarry Highland Games creating a wonderful family meeting place. He was a crossword master, an avid reader of news, history, sports, the dictionary and jokes. In retirement, he enjoyed typing with two fingers on his Corolla typewriter creating memoirs that connected us all together.

A celebration of Ewen’s life will be held at Parkwoods United Church, 85 Parkwoods Village Drive, Toronto,
M3A 2X9 on Saturday, October 22nd, 2022 at 2:00 pm. If desired and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the nurses and doctors in the Emergency Departments of your local hospital or a charity of your choice.  To view the service via Zoom, please visit Arbormemorial.ca for more information.

A celebration of Ewen’s life will also take place where his journey began in Glengarry County.  Please join us at the Lochiel Centre, Saturday October 29, 2022 from 2:00-5:00pm, 20863 Lochiel Road, Alexandria, Ontario.
