SUMMARY:Vankleek Hill Myeloma Canada Ride
DESCRIPTION:Vowing to honour the legacy of her late husband\, Denyse along with her two sons\, are gearing up to cycle in the Vankleek Hill Myeloma Canada Ride: Bike to Beat Myeloma. The Ride takes place June 11\, 2023\, at Beau’s Brewery\, at 10 a.m.\, and helps to raise myeloma awareness and critical funds for a cure. Denyse is hopeful that a cure will be found so that others don’t experience the same suffering her husband and family endured. \n\n\n\nThe Myeloma Canada Ride will take place in seven Canadian locations this spring: Halifax Nova Scotia\, Niagara Region Ontario\, Red Deer County Alberta\, Sudbury Ontario\, St. John’s Newfoundland\, Richmond British Columbia\, and Vankleek Hill Ontario. A virtual option is also available for those who are unable to participate in one of the in-person events\, or who wish to create their own cycling challenge. The collective national fundraising goal of the ride has been set at $300\,000. \n\n\n\nThe Vankleek Hill Myeloma Canada Ride promises to be a fun and fulfilling event for cyclists of varying levels\, with a shorter\, more leisurely 30 to 40 kilometre route\, and a more challenging route of more than 70 kilometres. To register or donate\, visit: www.myelomaride.ca.

SUMMARY:Blacksmith Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Glengarry Pioneer Museum will ring with the sound of hammers hitting anvils during its seventh-annual Smith-In Blacksmith Festival on Saturday and Sunday\, 17-18 June\, 2023 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. \n\n\n\nApproximately twenty blacksmiths from across Ontario\, Quebec\, and the USA will come together to share their skills and products with visitors to the museum and fellow smiths. The museum’s 200 year old blacksmith shop will come to life as skilled blacksmiths work on a replica 19th century musket barrel. Other blacksmiths will bring their portable forges of all sorts in tow\, or even strapped to their roof! They are resourceful\, skilled people who keep one of the most important heritage trades alive today. Until the early to mid 20th century\, there were blacksmith shops in every town and almost every crossroad. They were the heart of a village\, right up there with the church. Just as in days past\, the blacksmiths at the Smith-In will be making tools\, door latches\, chain\, knives\, and who knows what! Visitors will just have to come out to see their craftsmanship for themselves. \n\n\n\nIn addition to wandering the museum grounds to see what all of the blacksmiths are working on\, visitors can also have their children take part in a scavenger hunt to win a prize and bang away on safer materials in the children’s tent. Food will be available both days. Cash\, credit and debit will be available. \n\n\n\nLastly\, on Saturday only\, an assortment of vendors will be onsite selling local wares – from wood and iron to pottery and produce. It is shaping up to be a perfect Father’s Day outing. Bring the whole family! \n\n\n\nFor more information and details\, visit the museum’s website www.glengarrypioneermuseum.ca or contact the museum at 613-527-5230. The Glengarry Pioneer Museum is in North Glengarry at the crossroads in Dunvegan.

SUMMARY:Kairos Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The Kairos Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies and the goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land\, and into the role of First Nations\, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level\, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. \n\n\n\nJohn Henri Commanda is Anishinaabe (Ojibway) of the Eagle Clan\, and is a member of Dokis First Nation. He is also President of Mahingan Consulting\, a firm that offers Indigenous Awareness Training\, including Kairos Blanket Exercise (KBE). He has a long experience with the federal government\, including several Aboriginal empowerment initiatives in the public service. He has also served the larger community as president of two Friendship Centres. \n\n\n\nArchie Martin is a Mi’kmaq and Metis Elder and Knowledge Keeper who devotes himself to educate and share the truth\, contributing to correct perceptions about the powerful historic role of native people in the building of the country. In so doing\, he advocates that together we can all continue to write history by opening to each other as peoples\, working towards true reconciliation\, beyond hatred\, prejudices\, and politics.
