SNC Youth Fish Camps educate dozens

South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 10th annual Youth Fish Camps have officially wrapped for the 2018 season. In total, 45 children aged 9 to 13-years old were hosted at three separate camps this summer, which took place at High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman, Cass Bridge Conservation Area in Winchester, and Jessup’s Falls Conservation Area in Plantagenet.

For a nominal registration fee, SNC provided all youth with the skills and tools necessary for two fun days of catch and release fishing at each camp, and no prior experience was necessary to participate. Kids were given a free rod, tackle, and were fed lunch. Additionally, the Ottawa Flyfishers Society were on hand to educate the children on the basics of fly fishing, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry joined to advise on fishing rules and regulations.

“These camps deliver an invaluable outdoor learning experience to local youth,” explains John Mesman, SNC Team Lead, Communications. “They help to familiarize young people with the natural environment through responsible fishing.”

After another successful year, SNC is hoping to expand the amount of its fish camps next summer to meet demand.

“There is a lot of value in these camps,” adds Mesman. “Kids are given the opportunity to fish all-day, make new friends, and learn about their local environment.”
