La Nation opens permanent household hazardous and special waste depot

Residents of La Nation will no longer need to stockpile their hazardous waste at home and await drop-off days.

Next Thursday, June 28, the municipality will be officially opening its new hazardous and special waste depot at the Limoges landfill.

The depot will be open every Saturday morning for the next 24 weeks into the fall. Residents won’t need to pay to drop off hazardous waste. Accepted items include pesticides, medication, propane tanks and batteries.

Below is a comprehensive list of what can and cannot be disposed of at the site. Items in the left column will be accepted, while the municipality is working to soon accept those in the right, with an extra fee.

Guy Malboeuf, La Nation’s solid waste manager, said he’d often see items like those above in regular trash and recycling.

Money was another motivator for opening the new depot.

“It’s cheaper to have the depot than have a single (drop-off) day every two years,” says Malboeuf.

It’ll save the municipality about $8,000 a year (not including salaries), he says, versus the former method of one disposal day every two years. By calling in contractors from the Kingston area and overtime for his staff, those days cost about $32,000 each.

The depot is only the second of its kind in Prescott-Russell, the other one being at the Bourget landfill. And it won’t be the last within La Nation. Malboeuf is working on another depot at the Fournier landfill, which would be open Saturday afternoons. If all goes well, he says it could be open by the end of September.

The current site is available for residents only, no commercial waste will be accepted.
