An independent public meeting will be held on October 28, just before the municipal elections, at the Grenville community room to discuss what’s at stake in the Canada Carbon’s Miller mining project. The public meeting will start at 13:30.

The group organizing the event calls themselves the Concerned citizens of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge and is comprised of André Therien, Normand Éthier, Jacqueline Richer and Carole Gratton. The group says that they are in no way, shape or form part of any political organizations or pressure groups.

They did disclose that two of their members, Jacqueline Richer and Carole Gratton, are part of SOS GSLR, a pressure group opposing the mine, but that this organization is not affiliated Concerned citizens of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge .

“We simply think that the citizens of the Lachute-Grenville-Hawkesbury area deserve precise and clear information on the subject as well as impartial. What are the impacts of such a project on our environment, our water, our air, our health, property value and our rights as citizens?” asks Norman Ethier, member of the Concerned citizens of Grenvile-sur-la-Rouge.

The group invited Steven Lauzier, geologist, to represent the interests of Canada Carbon, Ugo Lapointe of MiningWatch Canada and Julie-Anne Asselin, a lawyer specializing in environmental law to come and answer questions from the residents.

The Miller mining project has divided the municipality and has been a strenuous subject for both the council and residents as a whole. Multiple public consultations were done by different parties and Canada Carbon also hosted information sessions last year. This time around, the group is bringing experts at the table so that a composed and informed conversation may take place.

The mining project will be one of the hot topics in this year municipal electoral period and all candidates are expected to take a position concerning the project.
