On Canada Day 1989, Margaret Hawking returned to her home on Main Street, Glen Sandfield, Ontario. She'd been given a souvenir Canadian flag to wave at the Canada Day celebrations at Dalkeith Centennial Picnic.

Despite last week's cancellation of a press conference to officially launch the long-awaited broadband Internet project, the United Counties of Prescott-Russell is moving ahead with plans to bring an expanded high-speed Internet service online for the region.

The press conference was scheduled to take place prior to the regular meeting of counties council on Tuesday, August 24. Counties CAO Stéphane Parisien explained the press conference had to be "pushed back to a later date" because there are still some details that need to be worked out.

For anyone who believes in ghosts, the lands around Alexandria, Glen Robertson, L'Original, Glen Nevis, Blue Corners, St. Eugène is where you might find them.

Until I came to an intersection south of Dalkeith, I never believed in them myself.

The residents of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell will once again have the opportunity to savor unique products during the second Prescott-Russell Wine and Food Show, presented by Desjardins. 
The event will take place on Saturday, October 2 and will be held at the Outaouais Golf Club in Rockland. The participants will discover wines from around the world, sample a few local beers and satisfy their appetite with an impressive array of food from the region.

At Arbor Gallery this month, exhibitions illustrate the working methods of the artists and art on the theme of "the car."

The exhibition will run until September 12. The gallery is open from 12 to 5 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday. Admission is free, but your $2 donation is appreciated.

The 63rd annual Glengarry Highland Games came to Maxville on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31. Several thousand spectators attended the event, which culminated in the massed pipe band performance that featured 1,357 participants.

Audiences came from far and wide to enjoy the music, dancing, heavyweight competitions and more. See below for our photo and video coverage of the successful event as well as a list of the competition results.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) announced the awarding of $2.47 million in community grants to 51 not-for-profit and charitable organizations in eastern Ontario's Champlain region on Tuesday, July 27.

The grants were ratified by the foundation's board of directors on June 28, while applications for the grants would have been submitted before the March 1 deadline. Grants are awarded three times per year.

The process of sending out the funding has "in theory" already begun, according to Renée Ouellet, a senior communications officer with the OTF.

Crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the Sheep to Shawl demonstrations that took place at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum on Saturday, July 18.

This spinning wheel was one of many on display during the Sheep to Shawl event.Member of the Glengarry Twistle Guild were on hand to demonstrate and consult with others, and would-be weavers were also invited to bring their own spinning wheels or drop spindles.

The Vankleek Hill Music and Arts Summer Camp (MASC) at St. Jude Catholic School is currently underway, and this week is gearing up for a big presentation this Friday, July 23 at 2 p.m.

It is a two-week program that children ages 5 to 14 attend on weekdays to learn the basics about a variety of different instruments, create interesting works of art, and display their fine acting skills.

Everything old is new again, The Higginson Tower is another facelift - but this time, it's online.

Marco Heuvelmans, a 15-year-old student at Rockland District High School is very passionate about history and would love to pursue this in future studies has fittingly began his summer employment at the Higginson Tower. His job consists of giving guided tours and providing information to visitors of the tower.

The Vankleek Hill & District Horticultural Society held its annual flower show on July 18, 2010. The results were as follows.
In Class 1 (lilies), first place was Caroline Bissonette, second place was Vi Brunet, and third place was Joan King.

In Class 2 (rhizomes, tubers, hermerocallis), first place went to Liz Radix, second place to Vi Brunet, and third place was a tie between Mary Higginson, Monika Vogel, and Joan King.

In Class 3A (perennials), Vi Brunet received first place, Caroline Bissonette second place, and Monika Vogel third place.

The Bonnie Glen Pavilion was overflowing with Scottish music lovers on Sunday, July 18, as the MacLeod Fiddlers released their second album, entitled Glengarry Roots.

"It is with great pleasure that I bring to you this second recording of the MacLeod Fiddlers," said Ian MacLeod, the group's teacher and organizer of the event.

Two good reasons not to miss the 2010 Glengarry Highland Games on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31 in Maxville are the world class piping events and the best lineup anywhere in celtic entertainment.

The Games are synonymous with the finest in piping. Not only do pipe bands travel from across Canada and the United States to compete in the North American Pipe Band Championship, but in addition, the top pipers come to take the honours in the prestigious Piobaireachd (pronounced pee-brock) competitions.

Guy Marcoux was one of about 20 musical acts that drew hundreds of RVs to Parc Larocque for the 24th edition of the Alfred Country and Western Festival. Hosted by the Chavaliers de Colomb d'Alfred, the four-day festival saw thousands of people take in some of the best country and western music from Ontario and Quebec.
