The Champlain Library is celebrating Family Literacy Day on January 27 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative established by ABC Life Literacy Canada.  ABC creates free learning and promotional resources for anyone who wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well. Literacy is something that affects all of us. Whether it’s a senior trying to understand new technology, an adult upgrading their skills to find a better job, or a child trying to read their first story, literacy is everywhere.

This year, ABC Life Literacy Canada is offering 20 tips for families to do during 2020 to make sure everyone keeps their literacy skills sharp.  The Champlain Library is posting one tip each day on its Facebook page or you can visit www.abclifeliteracy.ca for activity ideas and free downloadable resources.  For more information contact the Champlain Library at 613-678-2216 or visit www.bc-cl.ca.
